How to replace Firefly Q6 LCD screen … by David HK Apr 2017

My Firefly Q6 dropped into water together with my quad, I dismantled every removable components, including the lens, then cleaned with 70% alcohol, let it dried for 24 hours, rebuilt, it works! Except for the LCD screen.  So I bought a replacement LCD from Gearbest of around US$4 before shipping.

The soldering of the LCD tiny pins was inspired by the below Master Soldering youtube video:

You need a small soldering head like this, it is a 1 side pitch head, the model # is called 900M-T-1C, the head tip is around 1.1mm diameter.

Steps:
  1. Removed the lens and the lens flex cable
  2. It is a good idea to disconnect the battery as well (de-solder the battery wires)
  3. Tape the camera PCB board firmly on the table
  4. Apply flux to existing LCD pins
  5. Use the small soldering head at 400C or above, to quickly melt the old solder and at the same time use another hand to peel the old LCD off
  6. There will still be some solder left on the pins, some even have joined pins, no worry, apply more flux, and use the copper de-solder wick wire to remove the remaining solder
  7. When all pins in the PCB is clear, then use alcohol to clean up the flux.
  8. Now apply a layer of new flux
  9. Now tape the LCD on top, align the pins, apply another later of new flux on top
  10. Use the small soldering head at 400C or above, melt a small bean (just a drop) of solder (I used 0.8mm) onto the soldering head, and quickly pull the soldering iron across the LCD pins.
  11. Repeat above step until I covered all the pins.
  12. For joined pins, no worry, just apply the hot iron across quickly, it will remove any joined pins
  13. Lastly, don’t forget to clean up the flux with alcohol.
  14. Done!

After peel off the old LCD, before clear out old solder. Note i should have removed the lens flex cable.

After clean off the old solder and washed with alcohol.

added more flux before placing the new LCD on top.

Done! LCD replaced.

However, even though I’ve looks like a successful soldered the new LCD, but it still not showing anything, but the camera still works.

Next I think I will try to reflow the PCB using a hot air gun, will report how this will do…
